Daffodils - The Garden City
Share
Christchurch is truly a garden city.
With more than 1,200 parks and gardens spread throughout the city, green space is not an extra here. It’s part of everyday life. Tree-lined streets, neighbourhood reserves, riverbanks, and carefully tended flower beds create a special kind of beauty.
At the very heart of it all lies Hagley Park, an expansive 165 hectares (407 acres) of open landscape right next to the city centre. Woven through the park are walking paths and cycleways that invite people to slow down, stretch their legs, or simply enjoy being outdoors. Locals jog, families picnic, visitors wander. There is even a golf course to enjoy.
Nestled within Hagley Park are the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, widely regarded as among the finest in the world. Here, beautifully curated plant collections, sweeping lawns, and seasonal displays showcase the city’s long love affair with gardening. At any time of year there’s something to admire.
In spring, Christchurch truly comes into its own. Colourful flower beds brighten streets and parks, blossoms soften the skyline, and carpets of daffodils become a seasonal signature. These displays aren’t just decorative; they mark the changing season and provide a lift of spirits after winter.
Over the decades, annual garden competitions and awards acknowledge community pride with friendly competition for the best street frontages and outstanding private gardens.
In 1997, Christchurch won the premier section of the Nations in Bloom competition, earning the title of Best Garden City in the World. It’s a title that still feels well deserved. Christchurch’s gardens are living art that’s walked through, played in, and loved.
